Florentines and their city never fail to impress. Already in need of oxygen after admiring their art, visitors are mesmerised by the vision of locals at aperitivo time, effortlessly strutting, flirting and evidently enjoying life. At times it seems nothing much has changed since the days of the Medici.

Of course much has changed. Florence's short-lived stint as capital of Italy in 1865 was like a shot of adrenaline.

The city bulldozed, constructed, rearranged avenues, wiped out whole quarters and tore down the medieval walls. And so the scene was set for the modern regional capital of Tuscany. Along the broad viali (avenues) that encircle old Florence a confusion of endless traffic tears around in chaotic style.  The memory of the Medici, who for centuries commanded the city's fortunes and were, as generous patrons, instrumental in unleashing the Renaissance, lives on. To this day the family crest of six balls adorns many public buildings. The city's artists and sculptors, supported by the Medici and other powerful families, regaled the city with their finest creations.

Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, Giotto, the Lippis, Masaccio, Botticelli, Pontormo and a host of others left their mark, and formidable galleries such as the Uffizi, Pitti and Accademia today house many of their works. .[read more]

To the Gonzaga-in-Florence student, Italy is much more than a boot-shaped peninsula in the Mediterranean; it is an opportunity of a lifetime.

In 1963, Gonzaga University, a Jesuit institution located in Spokane, Washington, developed a program in Florence, Italy, which was designed to immerse students in both Italian and European life and culture.

Gonzaga chose Florence because the city is central to the past of Italy and to European civilization itself.

Florentine museums are crowded with the paintings that transformed European taste in the fifteenth century; her streets are lined with buildings that initiated modern architecture. Yet, the city is more than a museum piece. It is intensely alive - a center of modern art, fashion, and refinement.

Florence is also central to Italy’s present. It is two hours by train to the region of Lombardy, the humming center of Italy’s economic miracle and a stepping-off place for the ski slopes and lakes of the Alps. It is also 2 hours to Venice, a city which no photograph can do justice.

It is one and a half hours to Rome, capital of Italy and of the Church, where ancient, medieval, and modern culture mingle in every street. It is 3 and a half hours to Naples, Pompeii, and Mount Vesuvius, the southern region no traveler would want to miss.

Here in Florence, Italy’s center, Gonzaga maintains a campus offering a core of historical, business, cultural, and sociological studies, rich and varied in content, but unified by the experience of Italy, past and present. [read more]

In 1859, it became the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, and in 1923, the Istituto was officially denominated a University by the Italian Parliament.
Currently, the University of Florence consists of 12 faculties and has nearly 60,000 matriculated students. [read more]

And while at Sarah Lawrence, he played a fundamental role in the college summer program in Florence. His affiliation with the program began in 1958, and since then he was its director for several years. In the meantime the University of Michigan began co-sponsoring the Florence Summer Program with Sarah Lawrence College in 1965...

The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz is one of the oldest research institutions dedicated to the History of Art and Architecture in Italy, where facets of European, Mediterranean and global history are subject to close scrutiny.

Founded in 1897 on the private initiative of a group of independent scholars, it has been under the auspices of the Max Planck Society since 2002. Approximately thirty scholars are currently employed at the Institute, which is run by two directors, and the promotion of international young scientists and academics is high on its internal agenda.

In addition to numerous individual research projects, those funded by third parties and a multiplicity of international collaboration with universities, museums and research institutes, Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz provides a platform for larger long- and medium-term projects whose subject matter ranges from Late Antiquity to the Modern Age.

The Institute’s resources, including the library with over 300,000 volumes, some of which are extremely rare, 940 ongoing journal subscriptions, and one of the most wide-ranging photographic libraries on Italian art, are placed at the disposal of researchers from all over the world.

.[read more in Japanese or in Italian]
