THE CATHEDRAL and THE CUPOLA

The Cathedral of Florence has a typical Italian gothic building and is dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore. The church was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio who enlarged the existing religious structure. Brunelleschi built the Dome in 1436. The internal wall were frescoed by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. The interior preserves important works of art.
THE EXCAVATIONS OF SANTA REPARATA
Piazza del Duomo, inside the Cathedral. Phone 055 2302885

The remains of the most ancient cathedral of Florence (5th century). Roman and Paleochristian relics, sculptures and frescoes fragments. The tomb of Brunelleschi, 1446, was found here.

GIOTTO'S BELLTOWER
Piazza Duomo. Phone 055 230 2885. Closing Days: none.

One of the most striking views of the city. Giotto was the architect of the project, although at the time of his death only the lower part was completed.

BAPTISTERY
Piazza S.Giovanni,. Phone 055 2302885.

One of the oldest buildings in Florence. There are outstanding external sculptures and basreliefs above the doors and on the doors themselves. The gilded doors were made by Andrea Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti. In the interior: inlaid floor and large mosaics on the ceiling and apse.

THE GALLERY OF THE 'SPEDALE DEGLI INNOCENTI'

In the building by Brunelleschi, marking the birth of Renaissance architecture, is a collection of detached frescoes and sinopie dating from 14th to 18th century. At the first floor an important collection of Medieval and Renaissance works.

THE 'OPERA DEL DUOMO' MUSEUM

This museum in renowed for its sculptures from 14th century and the first part of the Renaissance by Arnolfo di Cambio, Andrea Pisano, Luca della Robbia, Donatello, Michelangelo: works once in the Baptistery, Cathedral, Bell tower. There are also tools, models paintings, reliquaries, illuminated codices, drawnings and the Silver Altar of St.John.

THE 'OPERA OF S. CROCE' MUSEUM

Located next to the Santa Croce church. It houses masterpieces by Cimabue, Donatello, Orcagna, Domenico Veneziano, Bronzino.

STIBBERT MUSEUM
Via F.Stibbert, 26. Phone 055 475520. Closing Days: Thuersday.

Collection of art object, paintings, sculptures, drawings left by the English collector Frederick Stibbert. The collection of weapons from Europe, India, Arabia, Japan and Africa is unique in the world.

CHAPEL OF THE MAGI - THE MEDICI-RICCARDI PALACE
Via Cavour, 3. Phone 055 276 0340. Closing Days: Wednesday.

This palace was the first residence building to be erected in Florence. Its most important section is the small chapel frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli with the Adoration of the Magi. In the 17th century part of the palace is the gallery decorated by Luca Giordano.
CASA BUONARROTI
Via Ghibellina, 70. Phone 055 241 752. Closing Days: Tuesday.

The small palace aquired by Michelangelo for his heirs contains relics and works of youth of the great sculptor.
CASA DI DANTE
Via S. Margherita, 1. Phone 055 283 343. Closing Days: Tuesday.

Near the believed house of Dante Alighieri there is a small museum that documents the life and works of the poet.
CASA GUIDI
Piazza San Felice, 8 - Open on Mon/Wed/Fri afternoon from April to November.

Here lived the famous English poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barret Browning. The apartment and furnitures dating back to that time.
CASA SIVIERO
Lungarno Serristori 1/3 - Open on Mon. morning and Sat. afternoon.. Phone 055 2345219.

Some wooden statues of the 14th century, paintings on gilded backgrounds, small bronze statues, terracottas, ancient shrines and furniture pieces of Rodolfo Siviero's collection.
MARINO MARINI MUSEUM
P.za S. Pancrazio. Phone 055 219 432. Closing Days: Tuesday, Sunday, public holidays and August.

Works by the great sculptor donated to Florence.
THE FRATELLI ALINARI MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

MUSEUM OF S. STEFANO AL PONTE

Works taken from nay churches of Florence and its diocese. Among these the masterpieces: Madonna by Giotto, the Adoration of the Magi by Paolo Uccello and St.Julian by Masolino.
HORNE MUSEUM
Via de' Benci, 6. Phone 055 244 661. Closing Days: holidays and Sunday.

A minor museum left to the State by Herbert Percy Horne, English critic and collector. Paintings by Giotto, Lorenzetti, Masaccio, Boccafumi plus sculptures ceramics, bronze works.
