Harry's Bar: A Florentine Icon [by Susan D'Inverno - New York]
After a long day of lectures, sight seeing, and dodging motorini there is no place to indulge yourself quite like Harry's Bar, a point of tranquil bliss in what can seem an overly stimulating Florence.
It's sophisticated and worldly clientele have been coming to this posh restaurant bar for over fifty years, since it opened its doors to Florence in 1953.
Modeled after the cosmopolitan chic American bar style, Harry's was created with high level clientele in mind, and this fundamental vision has remained unchanged for over half a century.
Once you enter the set of double doors leading into the restaurant, it seems as though you are stepping into your own private club, minus the initiation fee of course.
Everything in this intimate and welcoming restaurant is of the highest quality, from the Murano artisan glass lamps to the fresh ingredients in the cuisine.
The tables are topped with rose colored silk tablecloths and the walls are adorned with original prints by local Florentine artists depicting classic scenes around the city. As much as the inside is alluring, be sure to check out the outside terrazza which overlooks the Arno and yields a view of the Ponte Vecchio in the distance.
The barista Leo, a local hero and world renowned bar tender, will welcome you in with a warm smile and cool Bellini (made with champagne and fresh orange juice) as he entertains you with stories and anecdotes of the celebrities, both local and world renowned, that have frequented Harry's Bar in the past.
The cuisine is refreshingly simple, using only the best ingredients to create gastronomic delights at very reasonable prices, averaging at about 15-17 Euros per dish. The meat and fish dishes are especially popular, including the Tartar which is prepared right in front of the guests by the wait staff.
Pair your dishes with one of Harry's recommended wines and you will certainly have an unforgettable dining experience.
Whether you are looking for a stylish ambiance to enjoy a drink with friends or want to impress your parents with your new found European finesse, Harry's Bar is the perfect locale for all occasions.
Whatever you do with your time in Florence, do not miss this Florentine treasure!
